Robin Kay was an artist member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1938. He served with the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force in the Middle East, later joining the war history staff under Major—General Sir Howard Kippenberger.
Kay wrote the histories of the Second New Zealand Division in Italy, and of 27 NZ (Machine Gun) Battalion and the Long Range Desert Group. He wrote extensively about New Zealand military history and external relations. Several of his artworks were purchased by the government for the National Collection of War Art, and more were later purchased by Archives New Zealand.
