The Treasury Islands campaign began in October 1943, and involved the seizure of Japanese-held Mono and Stirling Islands. The assault on the islands was led by the 8th Brigade of the 3rd New Zealand Division, assisting United States forces in the Pacific. Falamai, a village on a small peninsula of Mono Island, had been used as the Japanese headquarters, and was captured early in the campaign.
