Primarily a Navy Hospital Ship, the USS Tryon was classified as an Evacuation Transport ship which ferried injured troops away from combat zones, and also brought troops and military supplies to combat zones. These ships did not meet the criteria established by the Geneva Conventions for the designation of Hospital Ship because of this dual role, and were therefore armed.
