Brigadier General (later Major General) Melvill's war service included command of the 4th Battalion, 3rd New Zealand (Rifle) Brigade; the 2nd Infantry Brigade; the 1st Infantry Brigade; and temporary command of the New Zealand Division in June 1918. In 1919 he helped oversee the disbandment of 1NZEF as officer in charge of administration and commanding the troops in Great Britain. In 1924 he was appointed Commandant of the New Zealand Military Forces.
