Alfred Clive Hulme (1911-1982) enlisted in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 22 January 1940, and embarked for Egypt with 23rd Battalion in the 2nd Echelon. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for "outstanding and inspiring qualities of leadership, initiative, skill, endurance and most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty" during the Battle of Crete, 20-28 May 1941. Seriously wounded on 28 May, Hulme was evacuated to New Zealand after the withdrawal of the Allied forces from Crete.
