More About this Record
Alan Christopher Deere (1917-1995) was born in Westport and grew up in Wanganui. He joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1937 and obtained a short service commission in January 1938. In May 1943, during the Battle of France, he shot down six Luftwaffe aircraft and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). During the Battle of Britain Deere shot down another 6 German aircraft and was later awarded a Bar to his DFC. By 1943 he had shot down 18 enemy aircraft, and received the Distinguished Service Order.
Deere remained in the RAF at the end of World War Two, and retired in December 1977.
