Stephen Cyril Ettrick Weir (1904 - 1969), held the rank of Captain when he was seconded to the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. He was promoted to major, colonel, then brigadier, and appointed Commander of the Royal New Zealand Artillery. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) following the fighting at Sidi Rezagh, and a bar to the DSO after the second battle of El Alamein. He was awarded a CBE for his services during the Italian campaign, and was later chosen by Lieutenant General Bernard Freyberg to take over temporary command of the New Zealand Division when the latter was injured in September 1944.
