The New Zealand Division was deployed at Mersa Matruh in a successful attempt to stem the German Army's advance. Gradually the New Zealand troops were surrounded, but in the Battle of Minqar Qaim the New Zealand Division made a spectacular night break through the German lines and escaped to safety.
